how can oyu tell that ionic bonding will take place between metal nonmetals

aa you can see on the periodic table (which i don't have) as you look into it you can easily recognize the metals and nonmetal that will be a ionic bond all in the left are metals not including hydrogen because it is a gas. in the right is the non metals between the metals and nonmetals are called semi metals or metaliods
